26.surroundings  n. [pl.] all the things that are around a place     環境

surround  v. [T] 環繞

   Do you feel comfortable in your new surroundings?

       A barbed wire fence surrounds the prison.

** surrounding adj. [用在名詞前] 環繞的，周圍的

be surrounded by something 被……環繞

surround something with something  以……環繞……

surrounding sound effect  環場音效

例：The beautiful surroundings of the castle made our visit especially enjoyable.

　　The old castle was surrounded with very dense forests.

　　A lot of people from the surrounding area come to this church on Sundays.

　　She's always been surrounded by people who adore her.
                               

27.startling adj. very surprising 使人震驚的

startle v. [T] 使人震驚

   The startling news was just too hard for people to accept.

     We were startled by the news of his death.

28.spectacular  adj. very impressive 壯觀的

spectacle n. [C] 奇觀；壯觀

  Our graduation trip provided us with a chance to see the spectacular scenery of the east coast of Taiwan.

   Their wedding was quite a spectacle. The proud father walked down the aisle with a twin bride on each arm!

29.range  n. [U] a particular limit 範圍

     Students” grades are expected to be in the range of sixty to ninety points.

** range v. [I] 涵蓋

top of the range  最好的

a wide range of  各式各樣的

in/within range (of something)  在範圍內

out of range (of something)  在範圍外

range from ... to ...  涵蓋

例：They sell a wide range of electrical appliances.

　　The students' ages range from 12 to 18.

  

30.hint  n. [C] a useful suggestion 忠告；提示

Mr. Garry gave us some hints for improving our writing ability.

** hint v. [I, T] 提示，暗示

give/drop a hint 給暗示

get/take a hint 領會暗示

a broad/heavy/strong hint 明白的提示

a gentle/subtle/vague hint 不明白的暗示

hints on sth. ……的秘訣

例：I don't know. Can you give me a hint?

　　The man gave me some helpful hints on taking care of flowers.

　　Do you know what he was hinting at?

　　The professor hinted (that) she might flunk half of the students in the class.
