 I. Without/But for/Were it not for ....

Without/But for/Were it not for .... 都是當「要不是……」解。這個句構是一種假設語氣的用法，用以表達與現在事實或過去事實相反的事。

與現在事實相反：

Without/But for/Were it not for/If it were not for + N ..., S + would/should/could/might + V ....

與過去事實相反：

Without/But for/Had it not been for/If it had not been for + N ..., S + would/should/could/might + have p.p. ....

與現在事實相反：

If + S1 + were/p.t. ..., S2 + would/should/could/might + V ....

與過去事實相反：

If + S1 + had + p.p. ..., S2 + would/should/could/might + have p.p. ....

文法／句型 準關代的用法： 準關係代名詞（quasi-relative pronoun）有：as、but和 than，基本上這些準關係代名詞和關係代名詞（which、who、that等）的用法是一樣的，用以代替前面的先行詞及當連接詞用。只是準關係代名詞有固定的搭配字詞使用，詳述如下： 1. as 的用法：as 通常與 such、the same、as 並用，即such ... as ...、the same ... as、as ... as。 　 I plan to buy the same computer as you have. 　 We should teach our kids such things as will be useful in the future. 2. but的用法：but 是一個否定含意的字，因此其先行詞前常有否定字。 　 There's no rule but has exceptions. 3. than的用法：通常用在比較的句子中。 　 Never give him more money than is necessary.
